Two distinct works invite visitors to observe the blurring line between human and machine, the drive for progress, and the misconception of laziness. The four-chapter short film series Retraining Laziness (2023) follows a conversation between a human employee and a malfunctioning robot, discussing the connection between poor working conditions, self-exploitation and time. The Days series (2022) is an ongoing project of virtual photographs in various display formats. They expose artificial, dystopian beach landscapes and negotiate the collective image of paradise. The exhibition is situated at seeLab, a site that in itself can be read as a space of possibilities and interferences. Inside the room one finds raw walls and open cable ducts. The place looks unfinished and abandoned, forming a stark contrast to the futuristic concrete streets of the sustainable urban development area of Seestadt. The unlikely combination of the room and its surrounding offers the potential to tell a story that oscillates between dystopia and visions of the future. Retraining Laziness was realized within the framework of a European Media Art Platform residency program at FACT, Liverpool with support of the Creative Europe Culture Programme of the European Union and funded by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport (BMKOES). screens, dystopian scenes of temporary structures appear: a tent-like shelter, a trap, an improvised campfire. These fragile architectures suggest that humans once created dwellings and tools from discarded remnants. Yet only their traces remain; the people themselves are absent, as is the light that once animated the displays. The images hesitate at the verge of visibility. As one moves past, they surface from a muted grey, only to dissolve back into obscurity. The series ‘Dark Days’ investigates perception and truth-making, asking what endures at the end of the world and who constructs the narratives that survive. ︎ Installation view from the exhibition 'Passenger' is a hypnotic video loop in which the viewer embarks on an exploration of a familiar story, rooted in our collective memory. A lone traveler roams through deserted cities and dried-out landscapes. Hostile beaches and abandoned places drift past. Parasitic palm trees thrive on piled-up wreckage. No other being is in sight, this is the journey of the last survivor. Movement seems to be the only goal, and in these restless routes, the path transforms into a trance-like thicket. onto the floor, blackened plastic forms encrusted bubbles, and the white architecture collapses in on itself. "Under the Walnut Tree" is a series of burnt and melted Monobloc chairs. The once functional object and symbol of modern mass production, found on exotic beaches and small balconies on the tenth floor alike, undergoes a transformation. The twisted and crooked sculptures tell a story of leisure, transience, destruction, and human influence. In an effort to improve in order to stay relevant and benefit the society they belong to, they find themselves in a constant mode of self-exploitation. One works because one can, and not because one must. But due to an anomaly a robot abandons the assembly lines to explore an idle and independent existence. The video series Retraining Laziness follows a conversation between a human worker and a malfunctioning robot as they discuss unhealthy production conditions and their own relationship to work and time. The promise of endless growth did not come true. Society evaporated into the endless thirst for self-optimization, youth and immortality. Humans sit in temporary dwellings with chaotic dreams and never ending anticipation, but it is a dying planet. Two protagonists set out on a quest to break out of this drought. They are like heroes, born in a bleached-out vision of paradise. They seek for an invisible place, everyone knows about, but only few have ever experienced it. A physical site that is spread in time and space, one can observe a little piece of it, but never the whole. The characters go through a liberating act of transformation to navigate in this unknown: They pull everything out they know and soak it in to relearn!
